10-Minute-Neighbourhood

Concept for spatial planning of the future

Switzerland is growing: by 2050, around 10.5 million people will be living here. How can we create enough living space and use our resources carefully? One solution is 10-minute neighborhoods: at least 15,000 people live and work within a radius of 500 meters. Everything important for daily life—housing, work, leisure, public transportation—is within walking distance. This means shorter distances, less traffic congestion, and relief for overcrowded trains.

The concept provides municipalities and cantons with an effective tool for implementing the Spatial Planning Act. It promotes sustainable land use, prevents social segregation, and improves quality of life. The suitability of a neighborhood can be assessed and enforced. It is important for the population to be involved in zoning and land use planning.

Our services support you in raising public awareness of the issue of economical land use and stimulating discussion.

Refrences

“The concept of 10-minute neighborhoods can be applied under very different conditions. The exhibition, guided walk, panel discussion, and workshop are most effective when ideally combined and linked to a parallel planning process as well as the development of possible scenarios. This not only generates fascinating insights and stimulating discussions, but also provides concrete foundations for the further development of municipalities and cities.

Flawil – 10-Minute Neighborhoods in the Context of the Local Zoning Revision

The municipality of Flawil, together with Resilientsy, developed a planning process for the local zoning revision. For this purpose, three scenarios for Flawil’s future were created, and transparent public participation was carried out. This approach was supported by the Federal Office for Housing as a reference project.

The public was involved in the planning process from an early stage. Three events were held to engage the community with the concept of 10-minute neighborhoods.

Rüti/Dürnten – Exhibition, Guided Walk, and Panel Discussion as a Meta-Level for Planned Site Development

The Meier Garden Center has moved from Rüti to Dürnten. The former site in Rüti is now set for redevelopment. The traveling exhibition provided a practical framework to engage authorities, policymakers, and the public early on in a dialogue about the site’s development. In Rüti/Dürnten, the topic of 10-Minute Neighborhoods was addressed in three formats:

City of Zurich – Various Formats in an Urban Context

Cities face specific urban planning challenges. In the City of Zurich, various events on the topic of 10-minute neighborhoods were organized to raise public awareness and stimulate discussion.
